| dc.description.abstract | The rapid expansion of social media platforms has significantly transformed patterns of communication, interaction, and information sharing across the globe. While social media offers numerous benefits, excessive and uncontrolled use has contributed to the emergence of social media addiction as a growing behavioral concern. In recent years, researchers and mental health professionals have increasingly focused on the relationship between social media addiction and mental health problems. This review article examines the impact of social media addiction on mental health through an analysis of existing research studies, reports, and scholarly literature. The review indicates that excessive social media use is strongly associated with anxiety, depression, stress, sleep disturbances, low self-esteem, and social isolation, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Psychological factors such as fear of missing out, online social comparison, and cyber dependency play a significant role in intensifying psychological distress. The article also acknowledges the dual nature of social media by recognizing its positive aspects while emphasizing the importance of responsible and balanced use. The findings highlight the need for awareness, early intervention, and the active involvement of social work and mental health professionals in promoting digital well-being. | |
