Abstract

The antibacterial activity of petroleum ether, 70% methanol and aqueous extracts of Gymnosporia montana leaf and stem were studied. The dried extracts of leaf and stem of Gymnosporia montana were tested In-vitro against 8 bacterial species. Stem aqueous extract showed maximum activity compared to all other extracts. Stem aqueous extract showed maximum activity against Escherichia coli (17.0 mm) and Streptococcus pyogene (13.0mm). 70% Methanolic extract showed maximum activity against E coli (16.0mm). Aqueous extracts of leaf showed maximum activity against Enterococcus faecalis (7.0 mm) Petroleum ether extracts of leaf showed maximum activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (7.0 mm) and methanolic extract showed maximum activity against E coli (7.0mm) and leaf aqueous extract showed maximum activity against E coli (7.0mm).
