Well-being, work–life balance, and mental health have emerged as critical issues in contemporary academic institutions due to increasing workload, performance pressure, role overload, and changing organizational structures. The present chapter critically examines the multidimensional nature of well-being in academic institutions, with particular emphasis on work–life balance, mental health concerns, gender-based challenges, and the role of institutional and HR interventions. Drawing upon theoretical frameworks such as the Job Demands–Resources (JD-R) Model and Role Stress Theory, the chapter explains how excessive job demands, when not balanced with adequate resources, lead to stress, burnout, and work– life imbalance among academicians. It highlights the unique nature of academic work characterized by blurred boundaries between personal and professional life, gendered work–family conflict, emotional labor, and job insecurity. Special attention is given to women academicians, who face compounded psycho social stress due to societal expectations and institutional constraints. The chapter further explores the importance of supportive work environments, leadership styles, counseling services, flexible policies, mentor-ship, and gender-sensitive frameworks in promoting holistic well-being. Human Resource interventions are discussed as strategic mechanisms for enhancing faculty well-being and institutional effectiveness. In the Indian context, the chapter links Psychosocial Factors, Burnout Prevention, and HRM Interventions: Advancing Faculty Well-Being in Academic Institutions | 109 faculty well-being with UGC regulations and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, emphasizing teacher empowerment, autonomy, and professional development. Overall, the chapter underscores that promoting well-being in academic institutions is not merely a welfare measure but a strategic investment for sustainable academic excellence.
